“Music expresses feeling and thought, without language; it was below and before speech,

and it is above and beyond all words.” – Robert G. Ingersoll

I love music, and in a different life, I would like to think I would have been a musician. I DID at one point have very unreal dreams of being a rock star, and also some more realistic dreams of attending university for music (I played flute back in the day…you know, dinosaur days!) I decided to pursue something more practical though…well something I THOUGHT was more practical, which turns out it wasn’t and now I am a photographer and marketer, which I also love and life has its own kind of music and rhythms.

Last year, I was having tea with my kids piano teacher (who is AWESOME by the way…more on that in a minute), and she shared with me that she had this amazing collection of old music that was her grandfathers. OLD stuff, handwritten pieces lovely yellowing paper with handwriting and calligraphy and art that is extremely rare today (it’s not digital, it’s not practical, people don’t seem to have time for lovely stuff like this anymore).  I told her then I wanted to browse through it some time and take photos.

I think for people that love music, it becomes a constant and strong thread in their life forever. Kandice is a great example of this. She grew up with music all around her…at home, at church, everywhere. And everyone participated in that joy and love of music.  Kandice has been teaching my children piano for many years (while they DID have some great teachers before we met her, she has been a truly wonderful teacher). She loves music, but as much as she loves music, she loves teaching the enjoyment and love of music to children. She has a gentle spirit and more than anything, wants her students to grow up with a love of music they will keep forever. Her company is called Keys with Kandice and if you have children in the Waterloo region, you should definitely check her out for piano instruction. Your kids will love her. Okay, enough love-fest…on to the music collection. First up this gorgeous old leather satchel, that contains music books with handwritten notations from about 1915 (see the first two photos above – those were inside the satchels)

There was a chest full of music, ranging from very old to 1960’s (that was just a guess – there were SO many sheets and books in there, but I didn’t have time to look at everything).

A few of Kandice’s lovely baby grand…I would LOVE to have a baby grand (and no, I don’t play well enough to justify such a purchase) but can’t you just imagine spending a morning sitting by this lovely instrument with a tea and playing the music (or having it played for you…even better!) The other weird/secret reason I have always wanted a baby grand is that I would LOVE to be able to decorate it for the holidays…can you picture it? Candles and greenery and small figures and cards…sigh…(I guess buying a baby grand as a holiday decoration is a bit of overkill haha).
