Learn Public Speaking Kitchener Waterloo

A few years ago, I thought it might be fun and helpful for me to join Toastmasters to help improve my speaking skills, and hopefully, lessen any fears. I had no immediate plans to speak in front of others, but for me, it has been a life-long fear.

I am not alone in that. I have read that it is estimated that between 70-75% of us express a fear of public speaking. Apparently more than people state that they fear it more than death in surveys. Now that is some kind of fear!!

I was not THAT afraid. For me, it was more a lack of confidence that I could string some articulate thoughts together in any understandable way. One of the things I have learned as I have hit my middle years is that in MOST cases, MOST people hearing you speak are supportive and want you to succeed, and are MORE than willing over look your mistakes.

There is no downside to learning how to improve your speaking abilities, even if you don’t regularly need to speak in front of others.

I admit, I was still a bit afraid. And kept putting off joining. It was on my to-do list for 2 years. Oops!

I finally joined this past summer. For anyone that has any reservations about joining Toastmasters, just put them aside. Every meeting has been so fun. I have met some amazing people and heard a lot of speeches from beginners and pros alike. I am in the midst of preparing my second official speech. There is a simple program to follow, guiding you along. You will be assigned a mentor to help you out. AND you will have lots of chances to speak for shorter amounts of time, to practice and build up to full-fledged speeches. Who knows, maybe you and I will both end up on a TedTalk someday.

Check them out – you can search for any clubs in your area on their website, and you can visit as a guest. We LOVE guests at our meetings, so don’t feel like you shouldn’t try it out. Try out a few groups and pick which one fits you best.

If you are in living in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, you can visit my home club Lincoln Road Toastmasters. We would love to introduce you to everything that Toastmasters has to offer.
